Chukhung Ri is a classified group “A” category  Trekking  peak that lies above Chukhung village in the Everest region of Solukhumbu district. The mountain resides north of the town and takes about 3.5 to 4 hours of the lung-busting uphill climb.

Chukhung village is a famous rest stop where trekkers acclimatize when climbing  Island peak or side trips. During their time here, people climb nearby hilltops or peaks to let their bodies adjust to the higher elevation.

Moreover, Chukhung Ri is one of the viewpoints similar to Kala Patthar, which many trekkers climb when they visit the Everest region. This peak lies at an elevation of 5546 m above sea level and gives marvelous views of the Himalayan ranges and valleys.

You will see the beautiful view of Ama Dablam, Imja Tse, Nuptse, Makalu, Lhotse, Cholaste, Tawache peak, Kantega peak, Thamserku, and Baruntse from the top.

However, the Chukhung Ri viewpoint doesn’t offer the view of Mount Everest. Thus, the routes are less quieter and give you more privacy. Also, you get to experience the Tibetan-influenced Sherpa culture and tradition when preparing for the climb.

Chukhung Ri lies above the Sherpa village, which has a unique lifestyle. The locals are friendly people who are welcoming to visitors. Plus, they operate the tea houses and lodges, so you get to enjoy their warm and cozy hospitality.

 Chukhung Ri Difficulties

Chukhung Ri Difficulty level is easy to moderate. It is a small peak that doesn’t require any technical experience but does need stamina. Reaching Chhukung Ri top is on the list of most trekkers visiting the Everest region.

Chukhung Ri lies inside Sagarmatha National Park, so you need permits to enter this region. Permits are mandatory, and you should show them in checkpoints to move further.

When to Go Chukhung Ri

March to May and September to December are the best times to climb Chukhung Ri among all the months. During this time, there is no snowfall causing path blockage or avalanches.

Overall, you get to witness the distinct culture, beautiful mountain ranges, mesmerizing landscapes, and strenuous walk through remote routes when visiting Chukhung Ri.

 

Route Description to Chukhung Ri

 

You need to trek for about 4 to 6 days after landing in Lukla before arriving at Chukhung village. From here, you hike to Chukhung Ri the next day, taking the rugged and steep trails.

The routes are very well defined, with cairns marking throughout the way to the top. First, you do a slight climb, then turn left and follow the nice and easy path to the lower summit.

Then you again make a right turn and travel through the ridge of broken stones and scree. From here, you continue moving upward to the summit. The trails in some parts are not very visible and have steep ascents.
