Overview

The Ama Yangri Trek is one of the short treks in Nepal that has been gaining popularity in recent years for breathtaking panoramic views with minimal physical strain. It takes trekkers to Sindhupalchowk’s Helambu region, which is located north of the Kathmandu valley. Trekking to Ama Yangri is considered to be easy to moderate. The highest elevation of the journey is 3,771 meters, so there are possibilities of Acute Mountain Sickness. However, it is much less compared to the classic Himalayan journeys, like the Everest Base Camp Trek.

During the Ama Yangri trek, the trails include rhododendron, pine, and oak forests, river valleys, farmlands, and small settlements in the lower section. Similarly, in the midsection, the landscapes transform to Tamang and Sherpa villages, ridges, shrubs, and alpine meadows. Ascending up, it shifts to steep slopes and exposed mountain paths. The trek is both visually and culturally rewarding. Trekkers explore the traditional Hyolmo settlement and observe their lifestyle.

The Ama Yangri hike typically takes 4 days in total, starting from the capital, Kathmandu. It is one of the best choices for beginners who want to observe up-close mountain views with minimal physical strain. Furthermore, it is also ideal for trekkers with busy schedules.

Itinerary

Day 1

Kathmandu to Tarkeghyang (2,600 meters)

Elevation Gain—1,276 meters
Duration—5 to 6 hours

We start the day with a hearty breakfast in Kathmandu and then drive to Tarkeghyang. We can either take a public vehicle or we can manage a private bus or HiAce at your request. It takes about 5 to 6 hours and we will be accompanied by the views of terraced farmlands and lush green forests. Similarly, the roads are well-established, so it will be an easy ride. After arriving at Tarkeghyang, trekkers can explore the village trails lined with traditional Hyolmo and small monasteries (gompas) and prayer flags fluttering along narrow paths. We spend the night at a cozy teahouse, enjoying a warm Nepali meal and preparing for tomorrow.

Day 2

Trek to the Ama Yangri Base Camp (3,200 meters).

Elevation Gain—600 meters
Duration—2 to 3 hours

On the second day, we head for the base camp after a warm breakfast, of course. Today’s trail consists of a relatively easy and gradual ascent. You will walk through vibrant pink, red, and white rhododendron, oak, and pine forests. Trekking from traditional settlements, you can witness the colorful prayer flags and chortens. Since we will be heading to the summit the next day, we take a rest in a teahouse for the night. You may also explore the region and try local food in the meantime.

Day 3

Summit the Ama Yangri (3,771 meters) and back to Tarkeghyang.

Elevation Gain—571 meters
Duration—7 to 8 hours

Finally, we will head to the top of the peak on this day. The trail today is quite steep and requires an uphill climb, so we need to be cautious. However, it does not require any technical skills, so gradual elevation gain, proper gear, and a slow pace are enough. Depending on your speed and weather conditions, it takes about 2 to 3 hours to reach the top.

From here, we soak in the sweeping grandeur of the surrounding peaks and head back to Tarkeghyang, following the same path as earlier. Reminiscing about the journey and views with warm meals, we spend one last day in a cozy teahouse.

Day 4

Drive back to Kathmandu.

Duration—5 to 6 hours

After an early morning breakfast we start the drive from Tarkeghyang in a private vehicle or a bus. Leaving the mountains behind, we follow the same road as the first day of the trek, accompanied by the sights of farmlands and lush forests. After driving for around 5 to 6 hours, we arrive at Kathmandu. Then our team will escort you to your hotel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Ama Yangri Located?

It is situated north of Kathmandu, within the Sindhupalchwok district, in the Helambu region, to be more precise. This is one of the closest trekking destinations from the capital. Locals regard this peak as a protective deity and associate it with divine guardianship and blessing.

Is it a new trekking trail?

Yes. The Ama Yangri Trek is a lesser-known destination. In recent years, more trekkers are opting for this trekking route because of its short duration and unmatched 360-degree views of the snow-capped mountains. Additionally, it also offers a quieter experience than the popular treks of the Everest and Annapurna regions.

How difficult is the trek?

The Ama Yangri Trek is easy to moderately challenging. This is because the journey is only 4 days long and has moderate altitude exposure. Additionally, there are only a few steep sections near the peak. This can be easily managed with sturdy boots and trekking poles or sticks. Even beginners with a good fitness level can complete it.

How long does it take to complete the trek?

Typically, trekking to Ama Yangri takes about 4 days. If you want to make it even shorter skip the overnight stay at the base camp and head to the summit directly from Tarkeghyang. Keep in mind that this is only ideal for fit and experienced trekkers.

Does the Ama Yangri trek need permits?

Yes. Trekkers should obtain the Langtang National Park Entry Permit. It is 3,000 Nepali rupees per person per entry and can be obtained from the National Tourism Board in Kathmandu. It requires an original passport, 2 recent passport-size photos, and a copy of a valid visa.

How much does the Ama Yangry Trek cost?

Typically, the price of a standard Ama Yangri Trek ranges from $500 to $700. The total cost differs based on the group size, accommodation, food, and additional services you choose. Also, be mindful of the additional expenses of snacks, water bottles, and Wi-Fi facilities, as packages generally do not include them.

When is the best time to go on the trek?

The ideal seasons are the spring and autumn. This is because they offer clear blue skies, stable weather patterns, and comfortable walking temperatures. Hike to Ama Yangri is not technical and remains accessible throughout the year. You can opt for it even during winter and monsoon with caution and the assistance of a local guide.

Do we need to have any special equipment?

No. Ama Yangri does not require advanced gear. You should just take the essentials such as well-fitting trekking shoes and a 20 to 30 L daypack with multiple compartments. Bring warm, waterproof, and windproof jackets, comfortable pants, and a first-aid kit with pain relief tablets, blister tapes, band-aids, and your personal medication.
