When Is the Best Time to Trek Manaslu?

The time between mid-September to mid-December is arguably the best time for Manaslu circuit trekking. Along with this, the time between March to late May is the second-best time of the year for Manaslu trekking.

These times are the most popular times because they have the best climatic conditions. The best weather and mild temperature create the best environment to trek. Also, the distant sceneries will be at their best during these times.

Is it Possible to Trek In Low season?

Generally, summer/monsoon and winter are considered off season for high Himalayan trekking in Nepal. It is so, as during this time, the weather and temperature will not be conducive to outdoor activities. Summer/monsoon (June, July and August) is the hottest and wettest time of the year with intense sunshine and heavy downpours.

Trekking Manaslu Circuit at this time will encounter several difficulties, such as muddy and slippery trails, the possibility of landslides and avalanches, excessive sweating, sunburn, heatstroke, etc.

Likewise, winter is the coldest season, with bitter temperatures. The higher Manaslu slopes receive heavy snowfall and the high mountain passes such as Larkya La can become impassable with an accumulation of thick snow. The frigid weather and snow blocked trails will add safety and navigation difficulties to your adventurous Manaslu Circuit Trek.

However, while both seasons present their own share of challenges, they also provide you with unique experiences in your mountain journey. If you are well prepared for the weather conditions of off seasons with proper gear, logistics and safety precautions, your Manaslu Circuit trekking journey at this time is equally rewarding.

 Trek Difficulty & Altitude Variation

Crossing the Larkya Pass, 5125 meters, is a challenging of  Manaslu circuit trek. Due to its high altitude, climbing and crossing the high pass is tough. You are at a risk of altitude sickness. Also, the pass remains covered in snow and ice during winter and hence remains closed. Likewise, crossing the pass in monsoon is also tough.

Arranging the permits. You need a special permit called the restricted area permit for Manaslu Circuit trekking. Obtaining the permit requires different terms, conditions and procedures. We can help you arrange your permits if you’d allow us to.

There are some landslide prone areas on the trek route. Walking through these areas means you’re walking with high risk. The area on the trek route between Khorla Besi to Tatopani and on the stretch from Dobhan to Yaru are the areas with risks of landslide.  Read More Manaslu Circuit trek difficulties

Altitude Variation

As the journey starts at Soti khola which is at a pretty low height of 730 meters above the sea level, the altitude varies a lot throughout the trip. It is a strenuous trek which requires travelers to be in good physical health. The trekkers pass through various villages such as Jagat (1340 meters), Ghap (2397 meters) and Samagaon (3530 meters) finally making their way up to the Larkya Pass (5160 meters) which is the highest point of the trip. The trek gains massive altitude within a span of a few days and the vegetation, wildlife and cultures vary accordingly as well.

Will I get altitude sickness, and how to prevented?

The Manaslu Circuit Trek poses a high risk of altitude sickness. It takes you to the significant altitudes in the mountain with the highest point being Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters. At such height, the air is thinner with low oxygen levels. This will make it difficult to breathe and ultimately lead to altitude sickness with several other symptoms.

The common symptoms of altitude sickness are headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, insomnia, etc. Be mindful of these symptoms during your high altitude journey of the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

If you feel any discomfort, communicate with your guide and descend to the lower altitudes immediately. Do not ascend further until you fully recover from the altitude symptoms. To avoid altitude sickness, you should maintain good hydration, avoid smoking and drinking alcohol, take a healthy and nutritious diet and pace slowly with enough time for acclimatization.

Physical Fitness, Training and Cardiovascular Exercises

Manaslu Circuit Trek is a moderate level adventure in the remote Himalayas. It involves trekking to the high altitude points and navigating tough mountainous terrains.

Being in proper shape and having good health conditions are the prime requirements of this high Himalayan endeavor. During the everyday trekking journey, you will have to walk for around 5 to 6 hours on average.

Proper physical stamina and endurance capacity are essential to sustain consecutive trekking days for long hours daily. Overall, to overcome several challenges presented by the tricky trails with ups and downs and twists and turns, you need to have a considerable level of physical fitness.

For a fit body, you need to do hard work. Consider engaging in physical workouts a few weeks prior to the start of the journey. Combining cardiovascular exercises, strength training, flexibility routines and proper nutrition helps you to achieve optimal fitness levels.

Cardiovascular exercises/aerobic exercises help to promote endurance levels, sleep quality, muscle efficiency, immunity, mental health and overall fitness. It involves activities such as running, jogging, cycling, swimming, rowing, walking, dancing, jumping rope, stair climbing, brisk walking, etc.

Likewise, fitness exercises help to upgrade your strength, stamina, balance, stability, overall health and well being. The fitness workout includes activities like weight lifting, push ups, pull ups, one led stand, squats, plunges, planks, yoga, stretching, etc.

Strength training increases your muscle strength and endurance capacity. It enhances physical performance with efficient joint mobility, fatigue reduction and stamina enhancement. Regular exercise boosts your energy levels, improves cardiovascular efficiency and reduces the risk of injuries during the trek.

Mental Preparation

Beyond physical conditioning, sound mental health is also crucial for the success of an alpine endeavor of Manaslu Circuit Trek. The journey can cause mental fatigue with its demanding high altitude terrain, remoteness, unpredictable weather conditions and several days of isolation. Good mental preparation before the journey and resilience during the trek is essential to stay calm and continue on your adventurous trip safely and efficiently.

If any uncertainties and emergencies are to occur during the journey, you should have the courage to overcome the challenges and trek forward. A strong determination with a positive mindset keeps you pushing further. Ultimately, you will kiss the victory. Always remember that goals are achieved only by conquering challenges. And, no paths are impassable though they might seem daunting at first.

The combination of professional guides and planned itineraries with acclimatization periods at Adventure Great Himalaya will enable beginners to experience a safer and more enjoyable journey.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek requires moderate to extreme physical effort. It requires trekkers to walk for multiple days at high altitudes while facing steep uphill and downhill paths. Trekkers need to possess both physical strength and endurance capabilities, together with mental toughness.

While the trek does not require technical skills, rough sections and lengthy walking periods will test your stamina and determination.

Do I need previous high-altitude trekking experience?

It is beneficial to have previous experience of trekking at high altitudes for trekkers who want to join this adventure although this is not an absolute necessity. Most trekkers start experiencing mild symptoms of altitude sickness after they reach 2500 to 3000 meters. What are the challenges of trekking Manaslu in winter?

The winter trekking conditions at Manaslu face difficulties of extreme cold temperatures, heavy snowfall and insufficient lodge accommodations. The snow and ice conditions will probably prevent access to high passes, including Larkya La.

The Larkya La Pass presents a considerable difficulty. It reaches an elevation of 5,106 meters which marks the highest point of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The ascent to the pass requires trekkers to climb up a steep and rugged path which has frequent snow and ice coverage.

The physical preparation process requires training that develops cardiovascular fitness and enhances your leg and core strength. Activities like running, cycling, dancing, swimming and stair climbing upgrade your cardio endurance.

Likewise, your body will develop the necessary stamina for uphill hiking and descending through exercises like squats, planks, push ups and lunges. Road Trip & Transportation

What is the road condition like Manaslu Circuit Trek?

The road conditions from Kathmandu to Machha Khola are mixed. The first part of the route uses paved highways which later transform into rough dusty roads. There are frequent bumps starting from Arughat.

During the monsoon season, landslides and muddy stretches may cause considerable delays, while the stretches may be too narrow for driving at a fast pace. The final part of the ride can be long and tiring due to rough terrain and tight curves. The return trip from Dharapani to Kathmandu experiences the same road conditions.

How long is the drive?

The drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola which covers approximately 160 kilometers requires 7 to 10 hours for completion depending on traffic, weather and road conditions.

The drive from Dharapani back to Kathmandu which covers a distance of 230 kilometers takes between 9 and 11 hours to complete. The steep winding roads together with local traffic and occasional landslides will slow down travel during monsoon times.

What types of vehicles are available?

The available vehicles for traveling include:
Local buses (budget-friendly, but not so comfortable)
Shared jeeps (comfortable compared to buses, a good option)
Private 4WD jeeps (the most comfortable option)

The choice of vehicle makes a lot of difference in the level of comfort, flexibility, and the energy level at which the trekking may begin.

Do you recommend a private jeep or a local bus?

For most trekkers a private 4WD jeep is the best choice. Though this option is expensive, it significantly reduces travel time while increasing safety on rough terrain and minimizing fatigue at the beginning of the trek.

Local buses operate at an economical rate but they are overcrowded and take extended travel times. For wilderness travelers investing in a multi-day high-altitude trek the added comfort and reliability of a private jeep is usually worth the cost.
