Samagaun Village (3530m)

Samagaun is a small high-altitude village located in the Gorkha district of the Manaslu region. Here, the landscapes include glaciers, alpine terrains, and yak pastures. The sight of locals herding their livestock with a backdrop of giant mountains makes a stunning scenic view. The village is a major acclimatization point for the Manaslu Base Camp or the Manaslu Circuit trek. Sleeping at a lower altitude before trekking towards a higher altitude is a golden rule for high-altitude treks. So, Samagaun’s altitude of 3,530 meters makes it a perfect resting point before heading for the Larkya La pass (5,214 meters)
The village is surrounded by mountains like Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli, Larke Peak, and Mount Manaslu. This offers trekkers a stunning scenic view. Furthermore, it has a health post that provides medical support for minor injuries and treats Acute Mountain Sickness. However, it does not provide advanced medical care. Similarly, the locals of Samagaun are the Nubri people, who are of Tibetan descent and practice Tibetan Buddhism. Also, they speak their own language called Nubri.
Treks Including Samagaun
As a central hub of the Manaslu region, several classic Manaslu treks include Samagaun village as a major stop. Every trekker spends at least one night here to help their body adjust and to prepare for the elevation gain.
First, in the Manaslu Base Camp trek, the village serves as an acclimatization point before ascending to the base camp (4,800 meters). Likewise, trekkers descend back to Samagaun to spend the night, as there are no permanent teahouses or lodges in the base camp.
Many trekkers extend the base camp trek to the Manaslu Circuit trek. Samagaun’s location makes it perfect for the acclimatization day. Trekkers usually explore the village and its landscape and hike to the beautiful Birendra Tal. This rest day helps the body adjust and prepare for the upcoming days at higher altitudes. Even in the short Manaslu Circuit trek, Samagaun village is an equally important destination to acclimate before the high altitude challenges.
On the Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley trek, Samagaun is the last major settlement area before heading toward the rugged mountain trails. The acclimatization and exploration day at Samagaun offers two hiking options for physiological preparation. The first option is Birendra Tal, and the second is the ancient Pungyen Gompa (monastery).
Scenic And Cultural Highlights Of Samagaun
Samagon offers an up-close view of the eastern face of the Manaslu mountain (8,163 meters). Similarly, glaciers and alpine landscapes surround the village. A 45-minute hike from the village takes the trekkers to the stunning turquoise water lake, Birendra Tal. The stagnant water of the lakes clearly reflects the surrounding pearly white mountains.
Pungyen Gompa is located a few hours away from the village. From the monastery, trekkers can witness a 360-degree view of the Manaslu massif. Furthermore, it is believed to be closely associated with the spiritual heritage of the region. So, the locals pray, meditate, and perform religious ceremonies here. The trail leading to Pungyen monastery is lined with ancient mani walls.
The Nubri people are the dominant ethnic group of the village. Trekkers can explore their daily lives and discover their cultural practices and traditions. Moreover, trekkers have the opportunity to observe the Syabru dance, which is performed at weddings and at the end of the harvest. Nubris sing traditional songs “Lu” or “Shunglu” while working on the fields or herding yaks. Trekkers visiting in February or March may witness the Gyalpo Lhosar celebration. Similarly, those visiting in late August or September get to see mountain horsemanship on the occasion of the Yartung festival.
